Working towards reconciliation with our Indigenous community

Indigenous Peoples Day is a good time for us to share information about some of the work we are doing in the spirit of reconciliation. We have recently partnered with the Children’s Aid Society of Hamilton and the Hamilton Executive Director’s Aboriginal Coalition to strike an Indigenous Child Welfare Collaborative. The collaborative has been meeting regularly to begin the important work of relationship development to achieve our agency and sector commitments. The purpose of the Indigenous Child Welfare Collaborative is to work together to develop strategies and pathways for a coordinated approach to services and wraparound support for Indigenous children and families.

This follows the work done last year when children’s aid societies and Indigenous groups from across the province met to hear an apology from the Ontario child welfare sector for the role it has played and continues to play in the disruption of indigenous families and societies.

Today, our Indigenous Employee Resource Group distributed to all staff a booklet containing the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and a resource guide to Indigenous services in Hamilton. They also hosted a lunch and learn with information about how to become a better ally. There is much to do and much to learn.

New Strategic Plan unveiled at Annual General Meeting

Our 2018-23 Strategic Plan was unveiled at our Annual General Meeting on June 18. Entitled Brighter Futures, the plan puts our vision of safe and thriving children and youth, empowered families, and stronger communities at the centre of our strategic map. Visit the Recent Publications page of our website, or click here, to see the document.

We spoke to 86 stakeholders, including 23 community partners, to find out what they perceive as our strengths and challenges. We were pleased to hear that they feel CCASH has made progress over the past 5 years in a number of areas, including communication and information sharing with volunteers, resource parents, staff, and the community. We are seen in the community as innovative and collaborative, and very dedicated to the welfare of the children we serve. Generally, we heard that we are on the right path in our approach to the welfare of children, youth, and families in Hamilton. Thanks to Anne Becker of Climb Consulting for leading us through these strategic conversations.

Be part of a child’s story through adoption

The Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Hamilton is hosting an information session for anyone who is interested in finding out more about adoption and the adoption process. There is a high need for adoptive parents who are ready, willing, and able to meet the needs of older children, large sibling groups, or those with complex medical, developmental, and behavioural needs.

DATE: June 20, 2018

TIME: 7:00 – 9:00 pm

LOCATION: Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Hamilton, 735 King St. E., Hamilton ON

REGISTRATION: Pre-registration is preferred, by calling 905-525-2012 and asking for the Adoption Unit

Every child and youth needs and deserves permanent, lifelong connections to flourish. Adoption is one of a number of options that Children’s Aid Societies consider when looking for lifelong connections for children in care. There is an extensive training and support network in place to assist adoptive parents in becoming prepared and confident to meet children’s needs.

Blessing of our Chapel of the Holy Family

Today we celebrated our new chapel – the Chapel of the Holy Family – with a blessing by Father David Wilhelm, who is a member of our Board of Directors. The blessing was attended by Directors and staff of the agency.

We are very grateful to the Ex Corde Foundation of the Diocese of Hamilton for its financial support of this space for quiet reflection and prayer. It is a beautiful, intimate space that adds greatly to our ability to support our service recipients, staff, and volunteers.
